I am Narda Butler, a homeschool Mom of five, and an Alaskan certificated teacher. I offer, through DreamSpinner Learning, tutorials in Science and Alaska Studies for homeschoolers in Anchorage, Alaska. I also offer tutoring services for individual middle and high schoolers and for credit-recapture students through a partnership with Frontier Charter School.
I have been teaching junior high and high school science in my home for five years. I've taught my own children at home for eleven! (Three are graduated.) I endeavor to come alongside homeschooling parents in providing weekly tutoring and daily homework assignments. I depend upon parents to assist their child in keeping up with the homework and accomplishing my objective of "learning to learn"; there is no spoon-feeding and regurgitation on tests in my tutorials!
Tutorials are held weekly or bi-weekly and are designed to provide hands-on activities that supplement the weekly reading/viewing assignments. It is also the time students receive some instruction and are encouraged to ask questions.
Homework is assigned via this website. Students need to have access to a computer and the Internet in order to participate. Some tutorials make use of a text, others do not - all learning material is available on the website. I try to use a multi-faceted approach to the presentation of material, making ample use of online videos, audio sources as well as text. I also provide students a number of ways to demonstrate mastery of material. I do some traditional testing, but also use projects and dialog as means of evaluation.
